Welcome to Klines Resort, "your home at the lake!"

Klines Resort is dedicated to helping retirees, snowbirds, and empty nesters discover an active, fulfilling, community-minded lifestyle in our beautiful lakefront resort setting. We provide a supportive and affordable environment for independent retirement living, with a variety of housing options, including manufactured homes, park models, and seasonal RV sites.

We invite you to explore our unique resort community. Examine the benefits of owning a home, park model, or RV on one of our full service sites. Imagine the freedoms of the resort lifestyle. See for yourself why so many make Klines Resort their home at the lake!

Resort History

Albert & Myrna Hines developed "Hines Resort" in the 1930's as a fishing camp. They offered camp sites and primitive cabins for weekly rental. The resort was purchased by Paul & Joyce Kline in 1962, while Paul was farming the acreage. The Klines moved here with their 7 (soon to be 8) children in 1966 and gradually transformed the property into a retiree haven. A real tree lover, Paul planted a variety of native and specialty trees throughout the property and planned for significant green space throughout.

The Kline Family The Kline Family The Kline Family The Kline Family

In 1995, son Phil & his wife Tama returned to assume management and allow Paul & Joyce a well-earned retirement. They have focused on renovating the lakefront area and various infrastructure improvements, including the new water tower, storage area, and office; rebuilding roads, storm drains and sidewalks; and construction of the new clubhouse and recreational facilities.

The community now includes 159 manufactured homes, 42 park models, and 43 RV sites. Our 164 acre property has over half a mile of frontage on Portage Lake, a third of which is wetland and woods. Trails and golf cart paths are available around much of the undeveloped space, and cash crops are raised on 35 remaining acres.

Portage Lake

Covering some 500 acres and fed by the Portage River, Bear Creek and natural springs, Portage Lake enjoys an abundant supply of fresh water. Two thirds of its shoreline is undeveloped, providing habitat for a variety of wildlife. Fish include large and smallmouth bass, northern pike, crappy, bluegill, perch and others. Pontoon and fishing boats predominate on the lake, but there's also plenty of room for water skiing or jet boating. Those with canoes and kayaks enjoy exploring both the lake and its tributaries. In fact, Portage Lake is the start of one of our state historic water trails! The resort actively supports our lake association, Friends of Portage Lake, with fundraisers and lake activities.

Lakefront & Marina

Our lakefront is for the use of all residents: picnic areas, playground, swimming areas, marina, dock sites and natural areas spread along our half mile shore. There are 144 assigned boat slips on seasonal docks. Most residents place their own docks in the water or share with a neighbor; others rent a boat slip on resort owned docks. Our boat ramp is sheltered in the marina, and a fish cleaning house is available. For storage, residents may use our fenced storage area or rent a carport, garage, or mini-storage unit at reasonable rates.

Outdoor Recreation

There's so much more to do than just enjoy the lake! For golfers, the water tower field serves as our driving range, where you can practice your swing before visiting one of 8 local public golf courses. Our paved streets and off-road trails are great for bikers, joggers and walkers. Gardeners enjoy the use of our garden spaces; we even give you a free spring rototilling. Picnic tables and campfire rings dot our common areas. For the winter hardy, the resort is great for ice fishing and cross country skiing.

Planned Activities

Our social calendar offers a variety of group activities, from card games and dominoes to knitters, quilters and wood workers, to exercise groups and planned social outings. The Friends of Portage Lake is tasked with invasive weed control efforts on the lake. Members pay an annual membership fee and support other fundraisers used to provide funds for their weed control program.

Resort Infrastructure

Resort roads are paved, well maintained and well lit. Three snowplows and a salt spreader are available for our service crew in the winter.

Sidewalks and walking paths exist throughout the community.

Office and maintenance areas are conveniently located near the entrance, as are the Trash and Recycling Containers, RV dump station, mailboxes, and newspaper delivery tubes.

Mini-storage and RV/boat storage areas are available.

Drinking Water: Our class 1 drinking water system is supplied by four groundwater wells pumping to our modern well house, where it is treated before it is stored in our 100,000 gallon water tower. Five fire hydrants are dispersed in the residential areas of the community.

2018 Drinking Water Quality Report

Wastewater: Two sanitary lift stations push wastewater to our treatment area, where it is processed in two sanitary lagoons before being released into a groundwater discharge area. Both water and sewer service are included in your rent.

Household solid waste disposal is provided in containers near the maintenance area, and is included in your rent. Recycling is also offered for plastic, glass and metal containers, newspaper and cardboard. Composting is available for yard waste.

Our new tornado siren (2013) can be heard over a one mile radius and is radio controlled by the county to alert us to tornado warnings. The lower level of the clubhouse is designed for storm shelter use.
